Arranged in three groups: I. Scores (2 in 3 vols.). II. Vocal scores (16). III. Promptbooks (1). The full scores are incomplete. One is manuscript, in German, and begins at Act III. It carries the title "Robert der Teufel." The other is French, consisting of two incomplete volumes of engraved music carrying the pl. no. 1155 (S.l., s.n., n.d.). The vocal scores include two copies in French published by Brandus & Dufour (Paris, 1848?, pl. no. B. et Cie. 9197); one copy in French by Maquet (Paris, 18--?, pl. no. B. et Cie. 9197); three copies in German and Italian, published by Brandus (Paris, 185-? pl. no. B. et Cie. 5284); nine copies in English and Italian by Boosey (London; New York, 187-?); and one French copy which lacks imprint information. It carries the pl. no. T. 1398. The promptbook is manuscript, in German.

By 1831, Spontini's reputation has lost ground to the works of younger men, including Meyerbeer, whose Robert le Diable was first performed eight month after the date of this letter; this is perhaps the opera mentioned here, though Meyerbeer may be referring to the abortive Le Portefaix, the contract for which he had just signed. Despite the apparent warmth of their relationship, Spontini was already jealous. His own continuing lack of success he attributed to a plot orchestrated by Meyerbeer, "...
